Playing in the secondary is one of the hardest yet most important positions in football. Not only do you need to tackle well, but you also need to cover bigger, faster receivers and have the ball skills to finish the play and come down with an interception. Looking at the 2022 NFL season, Trevon Diggs is the favorite to lead the NFL in interceptions.

Diggs played in 16 of 17 games last season for the Cowboys and he led the NFL in interceptions with 11. To win the interception crown in 2022, Unibet Sportsbook has Diggs as the favorite (+500) to take home the award again.

Xavien Howard, the NFL’s 2020 interception leader, has the second-best odds (+750) to intercept the most passes. J.C. Jackson, the NFL’s second-leading interception man two years in a row, has +1000 odds to finish with the most interceptions this season.

Kevin Byard and Justin Simmons (+1500) are the safeties with the best odds to win the NFL’s interception title and they round out the top five favorites. The rest of the field has +2000 odds or longer to have the most interceptions next season.

Let’s dive into the favorites to be the 2022 NFL interception leader and break down the best betting picks for this title.

Why is Trevon Diggs Favored to Have the Most NFL Interceptions in the 2022 Season?

Trevon Diggs began his football career as a wide receiver at the University of Alabama, but he was quickly transformed into a cornerback. It took three years at Alabama and one year in the NFL for Diggs to feel comfortable as a defensive back, but last year, he led the NFL with 11 interceptions in 16 games.

Trevon Diggs 2022 NFL Interceptions Leaders Odds

While Diggs is certainly not the best cornerback in the NFL, what makes him so adept at creating interceptions are his hands, his ability to read the quarterback, and his appetite for taking risks. As a cornerback in the NFL, one false move in coverage is the difference between six points for the other team, and Diggs would frequently gamble in coverage to make a play on the football. Fortunately for Diggs, taking these risks resulted in a few of his 11 interceptions.

The Dallas Cowboys also have a weak secondary, so teams are frequently looking to pass the ball on them. Diggs played 94% of Dallas’ defensive snaps last season, giving him the opportunity to make plays on the football all over the secondary. Diggs is also not a lockdown defender, so teams will frequently pass directly at him giving him a chance to make a play on the ball.

Best 2022 NFL Interception Leader Bets

J.C. Jackson, Los Angeles Chargers (+1000)

J.C. Jackson finished second in the NFL in interceptions in both the 2020 and 2021 NFL seasons with nine and eight interceptions, respectively. Jackson moved on to the Los Angeles Chargers this offseason, and he is looking to bring his ball-hawking capabilities to the West Coast.

Last season, the Chargers had the worst run defense in the NFL, and they made a bunch of singings to help bolster the first two levels of their defense. With the high-powered Chargers offense, other teams will need to throw more to try and stay on pace with Los Angeles. This will give Jackson the opportunity to make more plays on the football with more teams needing to throw to beat LA.

Jackson will be surrounded by Derwin James, Asante Samuel and Nasir Adderley in the secondary, giving Jackson the ability to fly around the back end of the defense. With his ball skills and his nose for the football, I expect Jackson to turn his 23 passes defended last season (which led the NFL) into more interceptions next season.

Marcus Peters, Baltimore Ravens (+2500)

Similarly to Trevon Diggs, Marcus Peters is an aggressive cornerback that is not afraid to take a chance in order to secure an interception. Peters missed the entire season last year with an injury, but when he is healthy, he is an interception machine.

Peters had his most productive season from an interception perspective his rookie year, but he has still been making plays on the football since then. In a solid Baltimore secondary, Peters is often targeted and has the chance to make interceptions. Peters is also adept at making his own opportunities by being aggressive in coverage.

Peters will be working with a new defensive coordinator in 2022 and he will be coming off an injury. While it is hard to predict exactly what his outlook will be, we do know that he should continue to constantly be around the football.

Best Longshot Bet

Jordan Poyer, Buffalo Bills (+3000)

The Buffalo Bills have the best safety tandem in the NFL and a large part of that is due to how great Jordan Poyer truly is. Poyer finished last season with five interceptions and also had nine passes defended.

While the Bills are set at safety, there are some concerns about their cornerbacks, so teams can find avenues to throw the ball against them. However, with Poyer controlling the middle of the field, he has the opportunity to make more plays on the football and come down with more interceptions due to an uptick in passes against the Bills’ defense.

Poyer played 95% of the Bills’ defensive snaps last season and he should sit right around that number again this season. Poyer has missed just two games in the past five seasons, so there are no concerns about his availability for Buffalo.
